Christian Obodo Kidnappers Demand For 150,000 Euros

Nigeria international Christian Obodo was abducted early today in Warri as my flash news goes, his family confirmed today, (Saturday).
The player's family said Obodo who last season played for Lecce in Italy's Serie A, was driving alone in his car following a visit to a relative when he was taken by unknown gunmen.
"His whereabouts are unknown but his car was left behind by the kidnappers. We are yet to receive any call demanding a ransom," said a family member, under condition of anonymity.
Oil city Warri is in the restive Niger Delta, where kidnapping is commonplace.

Obodo was for several years a Nigeria international. Last season, he played on loan at Lecce from Serie A side Udinese. Lecce were relegated to Serie AB on May 13 after finishing third from bottom of Italy's top flight.
The 28-year-old midfielder is not the first Nigerian footballer to be abducted.
The brother of Everton defender Joseph Yobo was kidnapped before he was later freed, while most recently the father of Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi was also abducted before he was freed after a police raid.
A brief statement from Lecce said: "We hope the situation can be resolved as soon as possible in the best possible way."
Obodo's brother, Kenneth Obodo, who is also a footballer in Italy and is currently in Nigeria, was quoted by Italian news agency ANSA as saying: "Christian is fine. We are in touch with the kidnappers, who want some money.
"We can't give them more than 100,000 euros ($125,000). Unfortunately these things happen in our country."
His brother-in-law, Obidike Okechukwu, was quoted by ANSA as saying that the kidnappers had asked for a ransom of 150,000 euros.

U.S arrests 190 in child pornography crackdown

U.S President, Barack Obama
Police has arrested 190 people in a major United States crackdown on child pornography, officials told the BBC.
The month-long "Operation Orion" also resulted in 18 children being rescued, federal agents said.
Arrests were made mostly in the U.S but also took place in countries including Spain, Argentina, the United Kingdom and the Philippines.
The official in charge said many of the cases began with a child chatting with someone they had encountered online.
"Let this operation be a warning to anyone who would think they can use the internet to exploit children - we are out there looking for you, we will find you, and you will be prosecuted," Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton said in a statement.
The statement said that Operation Orion focused on the production, possession and distribution of child pornography in videos and photographs.
Those arrested included a 35-year-old babysitter in Louisiana suspected of using a seven-year-old child to make pornography.
A 28-year-old man in Michigan was found to have more than 1,200 images and 109 videos of suspected child pornography on computers and media storage devices, officials said.
Eight men were also arrested in Los Angeles, including one who met his alleged 12-year-old victim on the internet.
He was charged with enticing a minor to commit lewd acts after agents pretended to be the girl online and arranged to meet him at a shopping centre.

Disappointment as burial of plane crash victim is cancelled

Disappointment as burial of plane crash victim is cancelled

THe hope of many sympathisers who had thronged the Vaults and Gardens cemetery, Ikoyi  for the burial of Mrs Temitope Ariyibi, one of the victims of the Dana plane mishap, was dashed when the ceremony could not hold.
The ceremony scheduled to commence at 10 am, according to the management of the cemetery, was cancelled because "her body has yet to be identified".
Sympathisers and journalists at the cemetery were told at about 12.30 pm by a female employee of the undertaking outfit who did not want her name mentioned: "We are sorry to inform you that the interment of one Mrs Temitope Ariyibi has been cancelled. This is because her body is yet to be released to her family because it has not yet been identified."
The announcement shocked not a few sympathisers who berated the employers of the late 35-year-old deceased for announcing unconfirmed burial plan.
Ariyibi's employers, ConocoPhilips, had earlier announced that her interment would hold at the private cemetery after a service of songs at the Christian Day Centre, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.

More illegal structures to go in Rivers

By

The Rivers State government has said more illegal structures will be pulled down in the state capital, Port Harcourt.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi decried the impunity with which people develop property in the capital city, declaring that he would put an end to the trend before leaving office in 2015.
Amaechi, who said this during a two-day Rivers State Land Summit 2012 organised by the Ministry of Lands and Survey, also stated that this impunity is one of the impediments to even development of property in the state.
To bring sanity to property development in the state, the governor said structures erected on government land in any part of the metropolis will be demolished.
He therefore directed that all the houses developed in Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, Baptist High School, Sandfill area and other places be demolished without notice, arguing that when the people developed the structures, they did not notify government.
The governor also warned that a year before the expiration of his tenure, he would roll out bulldozers to demolish all illegal property across the city “because I will make sure that lawlessness will not be a problem to the next governor.”
Another problem hampering even development in the state which Amaechi also lamented is boundary adjustment between Niger Delta state governments.
The boundary adjustment problem, he said, is being fueled by agents of Federal Government who keep adjusting the boundaries of the states and ceding oil wells from one state to another.
He therefore pleaded with the Surveyor-General to leave Niger Delta region alone, noting that despite that Rivers State is 45 years old, its boundaries with neighbouring states are always being adjusted with most of its oil wells going to neighbouring states like Abia.
Another problem militating against even development of the city, Amaechi said, is the corrupt practices existing in the Ministry of Lands and Survey as well as that of Board of Internal Revenue.
He recalled how some former governors complained to him that some staff in the Ministry of Lands were calling to inform them that they had plots of land in Port Harcourt and the Certificate of Occupancy were ready “ yet these governors said they did not know when the land was allocated to them.”
The governor further lamented the corrupt practices between Ikwerre and Okrika people, who despite that they had sold their land to the defunct Eastern Nigerian Government, are now re-selling the same land to people.
In view of all these, Amaechi stated that he would demolish all the illegal houses, promising to implement the resolutions reached at the State Land Summit 2012 to enable the state to achieve paradigm shift in land administration and management across the state.
The governor also said that “this summit ushers in the process of unlocking the wealth of Rivers State and we are glad we have started it.”
Amaechi, who made this promise through his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, expressed optimism that “the implementation of the resolutions reached here will move the state forward,” assuring that “we will ensure that we change the way land is being administered and managed in the state.”
The governor thanked the participants and resource persons for their patience, genuine contributions and positive disposition towards issues raised during the summit, adding that these would “make things to work as we embark on this journey to change things in our state.”
Contributing, the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr Ezemonye Ezekiel-Amadi painted a sad picture of the situation of land documentation in the ministry when he assumed office in 2009.
But three years down the line, Ezekiel-Amadi stated that his ministry has “developed a tenure strategy plan anchored on the belief that a virile and robust land administration system that guarantees easy access to and security of title to land is a sine qua non for enhanced government revenue.”
The commissioner had declared that “those who think it’s business as usual in the way we administer land in the state should be ready to witness some surprises,” reiterating the resolve of the government through his ministry to drastically reduce the timeline for issuance of certificates of occupancy (C of O) in the state.
While appealing to the public to key into the new drive, Ezekiel-Amadi also disclosed that the process of identifying, mapping and allocation of land in the state has now gone digital, pointing out that the analogue system of cadastral mapping constituted a very serious challenge.
The commissioner expressed happiness that “we have gone beyond that stage now as everything is now being done in line with global best practices across the world.”
He commended the discussants, resource persons and participants for their contributions during the summit.
Earlier in his speech, the chairman of the occasion, Ambassador Cee Orike who was also the first Commissioner for Lands in the state recalled the analogue way they were doing land documentation during his time. He praised the ministry for “moving from ground zero to the tenth floor” following the establishment of the Rivers State Geographical Survey (RIVGIS).
Also speaking, one of the resource persons and Project Coordinator, Federal Land Information System (FELIS) in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Venerable Andrus Ukaejiofor, expressed delight with the summit, saying “it is the way to go.” He commended the governor and his deputy for “their commitment to change the system of land administration and management. They are doing a great work and I am proud to be part of this.”

Plane crash: Lagos declares six missing

By

… 38 displaced

Lagos State Government has confirmed six people missing from the buildings where the ill -fated Dana aircraft crashed on Sunday.
At least 38 others have been displaced from their residents.
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who disclosed this to journalists on Thursday, said of the five casualties affected on ground by the crash, four have been discharged while one is still on admission.
He reiterated government’s commitment to address the sufferings of the victims’ families, adding that necessary supports will be given to ameliorate the suffering, trauma and destruction caused by any form of disaster in the state.
Oke-Osanyintolu, who led the state government emergency response team to assist in the rescue and evacuation works at the crash scene, said the ill- fated Boeing McDonnell Douglas (MD-83) with registration number 5N-RAM crashed into five houses, leaving three houses severely affected on Akande Street, Iju-Ishaga in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area of the state.
He said the state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who was personally at the scene of the disaster, immediately directed that a camp be open to accommodate all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

How to prevent air disaster, by Tinubu

By
Tinubu
Tinubu

National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has urged the Federal Government to provide the mandatory standard double runway at the nation’s airports and make the airspace safe.
Tinubu spoke on last Sunday’s crash of a Dana Air plane in Iju-Ishaga, a Lagos suburb.
He advised the government to tighten regulations and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Speaking on a three-day national mourning declared by President Goodluck Jonathan, the former Lagos State governor noted that thorough investigations into the Dana plane crash and the implementation of the recommendations of previous reports are the panacea to a recurrence.
According to him, though Nigeria is not Africa’s biggest aviation hub, it has recorded five deadly air disasters within 10 years.
In a statement by his media office in Lagos, Asiwaju Tinubu said: “Nigeria is not the biggest hub in Africa; yet, it has recorded some of the most preventable air disasters. In the past decade, we have had five deadly disasters.
“The only way Nigerians can be spared further heart-wrenching aircraft disasters is for the government to get to the root cause of the problem. As we come out of the three-day national mourning, the agonies and pains of those that lost loved ones continue. Nigeria also continues to suffer a haemorrhage in terms of the lives lost and the national reputation and economic attraction ruptured.
“The only way to check similar mishaps is for the government to carry out thorough investigations into the Dana Air  crash and immediately make public all the previous panel reports on similar air disasters. This must not be a convenient excuse for making scape goats of some people.
“The government must, of necessity, tighten regulations and ensure standards, revalidate the operational licences and aircraft worthiness of all operating aircraft and enforce compliance in all aspects of air operations.
“Let me warn that we cannot afford to sleep at the switch this time. To go to sleep after a few weeks and return to our normal lives will be most tragic. “The present government most put on the front burner the issue of sanitising our aviation system and ensuring that aircraft are in good shape.
“Also, we cannot afford to misplace our priorities in this matter. A case where billions of naira are being expended on airports’ arrival halls when all our airports lack the mandatory standard double runaways, when the runaway lights are dull and inadequate and the air control tower lacks latest equipment, is unacceptable.
“It is a crash misjudgement. Nigerians would trade safety and comfort in the air and on the runways to white elephant projects all over our airports.
“With the huge revenue coming to the government, there is no reason our airspace and runways should not be safe. Given the fact that for every N25 paid by a passenger, N11 goes to the Federal Government in one form or another, not to talk of the several billions of dollars accruing to the government coffers through the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).”
The former governor condoled with the victims’ families and friends, saying the pains of the deaths would linger in the memories of those who lost their loved ones.
He prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace and God to grant unto their relatives the fortitude to bear the loss.

Panic over age of aircraft

By
Panic over age of aircraft

WOULD-BE passengers were not enthusiastic to fly yesterday in Abuja, following revelations about the ages of aircraft used by domestic airlines.
Some passengers changed their choice of airlines at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja.
But the Minister of Aviation’s Special Adviser (Media), Mr. Joe Obi, said there was no basis for panic because age may not matter.
At the airport, our correspondent met some passengers who were disillusioned about  the ages of aircraft.
Of the eight airlines examined by palnespotters.net, the least age of aircraft in the country is about 11.3years.
Some aircraft have average age of 25.6 years, 22.2 years and oldest age range of 30.2 years and 25.6 years.
The age range accounted for the panic at the airport, with some passengers cancelling their flights.
A passenger, Mr. Michael Adoga, told our correspondent: “I am just sick with what I read about the age range of the aircraft I had been flying.
“All my choice airlines have old fleet and I am so psychologically terrified that I do not feel like going on this trip again. Definitely, I will cancel my flight to Lagos .”
Another passenger, Mrs. Alaba Babatunde, said: “Oh God! I have been moving about in flying coffins. I cannot just come to terms with these revelations. I am really shocked. I am feeling bad.
“In the last 30 years, I have been flying but I have never come across these frightening statistics.”
Alhaji Ramalan Mohammed said: “I feel tempted to discontinue my journey with what I have read. I will discuss with my wife and children on the next step.
“I could not believe that we have 30 years old aircraft in Nigeria . The government should assist us to sanitize this sector.”
It was gathered that a reasonable number of passengers shelved their trips because of the aircraft age factor.
A counter clerk with one of the airlines said: “I cannot understand why some passengers decided to cancel their flights. They have been complaining of age of the aircraft.”
The Special Adviser on Media to the Aviation Minister, Mr. Joe Obi, however said: “Going by what some aviation experts said on AIT on Wednesday and the little I know, age has nothing to do so much with air worthiness. The real issue is about maintenance.  The Federal Government had taken proactive measures by banning aircraft above 22 years. The age does not have anything to do with worthiness of an aircraft, it is about maintenance.
“There is no need for panic by air travelers, the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, has been up and doing in ensuring that all relevant regulators live up to expectations before any aircraft takes off. Our airspace is safe.”
Asked if the ministry is issuing fresh directives to airlines on safety, Obi said: “There are standing regulations which the NCAA and others have been enforcing. It is incumbent on the airlines to comply with these regulations and to look inward.”
On the AIB team going to the US for the analysis of the Black Box of the ill-fated aircraft of Dana Air, Obi said: “The team will leave Nigeria on Thursday night and we expect that within a reasonable time, they will be back with the cause of the crash.”

Dana Air: engine failure not responsible

By
Mrs. Oduah
 Mrs. Oduah

WHAT caused last Sunday’s Dana Air plane crash in Iju-Ishaga on the outskirts of Lagos?
The question remained unresolved yesterday, even as the troubled airline faulted the claim by Aviation Minister Mrs. Stella Oduah that its crashed plane lost its two engines before the fatality.
It described the assertion as premature and urged Nigerians to await the analyses of the culprit voice recorder (Black Box) on the flight.
The airline said it was imperative to set the records straight as experts in the industry have continued to adduce reasons for the crash of the MD 83 aircraft following the transcription of the control  tower  conversation with the pilot.
Mrs. Oduah informed the President in a preliminary report that the loss of two engines caused the crash.
But Dana Air Director of Flight Operations Captain Oscar Wason, who spoke at a news conference in Lagos, explained that though the pilot reportedly declared failing engine during his emergency report to the air traffic controllers, it was unprofessional to reach such conclusions.
Wason said there could be regulatory approval for a pilot to fly an aircraft with a single engine, so long as it has the capacity to take the aircraft to the next airport for an emergency landing.
He affirmed that as much as Dana Air is set to fully cooperate with investigators, it is totally unacceptable for people to speculate on the cause of the crash as doing that could jeopardise the outcome of the investigation.
Wason denied that the ill- fated aircraft was carrying out a “ ferry” or test flight when it crashed. It is against regulatory approval for any airline to carry passengers with an aircraft on a test flight.
He said : “ We cannot, at the moment, determine the cause of the crash, as people have been engaged in speculations that the failure of the two engines caused the crash. That is not true; those are mere speculations. Even an aircraft could fly with one engine , in the event that the alternate engine packs up, to fly it to the next airport for an emergency landing. From what we heard, the pilot reported engine failure to the control  tower, while he was declaring emergency. It is not clear that the pilot said it was the two engines, whether the engine on the left or right side. That is only one account.
“We need to wait for the parameters of the black boxes to tell us what happened to the aircraft,” Wason said.
He debunked the rumour that the pilot tried to jump out of the aircraft, saying:
“ It is wrong that the two engines packed up. Everybody on board died at the point of impact; even the pilot was burnt beyond recognition. Thus, it is wrong for anybody to say that the pilot tried to jump out of the aircraft.”
All passengers, including those whose names were not on the manifest, will be compensated as long as their familiy members can identify the bodies and fulfill all the conditions of documentation for insurance,” he said.
Wason gave the nationality of the passengers and crew members on board as: Four Americans, including three children of the Anyene family, that were born in the United States, and the pilot.
Others are Lebanese, French Canadian and Chinese citizens.
Wason siad Dana Air has been sourcing its spare parts for all its MD 83 aircraft for major repairs at a maintenance repair and overhaul facility at Mytechnic Engineering in Istanbul Turkey, where Turkish Airlines carries out its checks, in addition to a facility in Madrid, where Iberia Airlines carries out its checks.
He added that nothing is wrong with the MD 83 aircraft that Dana Air flies, as there are over 900 of the aircraft type older than the ones in its fleet flown by both American and Delta Airlines in the United States .
On the controversy over the manifest, Wason said: “ The gap that existed in the passenger manifest arose from booking issues, as some passengers that were booked to fly during the pre- flight stage did not turn up.
“We had another passenger manifest, which is the post flight manifest. The variation or gap in the list was due to booking issues.
“The aircraft that crashed is not the same aircraft that had a technical problem in Uyo. And it was not on a ferry flight, as speculated.”
He spoke of plans by Dana Air to send relief materials to the families that have been displaced as a result of the crash, adding that 35 persons have been slated to receive such assistance materials.

Nigeria’s trade value drops by N1.9t in Q1

By
NBS
NBS

A sharp decrease in the value of imports relative to exports in the first quarter of this year has led to a significant drop in the value of Nigeria ’s trade.
The latest report of Foreign Trade Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and made available to The Nation yesterday indicated that the total value of trade in the quarter under review stood at about N6.62 trillion, compared with about N8.53 trillion recorded in the preceding quarter.
The NBS data indicated that Nigeria’s imports by country of origin showed that China, United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and India were Nigeria’s major trading partners with N265.3 billion, N196.1 billion, N190.6 billion, N169.9 billion, and N114.0 billion.
Similarly, the exports by country of destination trend in the period under review showed that India, United States, Netherlands, Spain, and Brazil were Nigeria’s leading trade partners with N688.5 billion, N609.7 billion, N482.1 billion, N390.4 billion and N328.9 billion.
An analysis of the trade value on export-import basis showed that Nigeria earned N4.97 trillion from exports with mineral products, mainly crude oil and gas exports, accounting for N4.19 trillion, while non-oil exports accounted for the balance.
Comparatively, total imports in the period under review stood at N1.56 trillion, a value indicating an increase of N255.20 billion or 18.3 per cent over that of imports in Q4, 2011.
However, the value decreased by about N1.45 trillion or 48 per cent cent when compared with the value of the corresponding quarter of 2011.
“The value of Nigeria ’s total merchandise in the first quarter (Q1) of 2012 stood at N6, 622.0 billion, compared to N8, 529.3 billion in the preceding quarter, a decrease of N1, 907.2 billion or 22.4 per cent. The change was as a result of a decline in the value of exports by N2, 162.5 billion or 30.3 per cent over that of the previous quarter.Year-on-year analysis revealed that the country’s value of total trade in Q1 of 2012 rose by N296.7 billion or 4.7 per cent over the value in Q1 (N6,325.3 billion) of 2011, the NBS stated.
“The balance of trade in Q1 2012 stood at N3, 317.5 billion, representing a decrease of N2, 417.7 billion or 42.2 per cent over the preceding quarter. This decrease is attributed to the decline in the value of exports (non-crude oil exports in particular) in the quarter under review.
“Year-on-year, the balance of trade increased substantially as a result of the decline in imports in Q1 2012 (especially the mineral products section) compared to the corresponding period in 2011.”

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday granted a former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, bail in the sum of N100 million.
The court also ordered him to produce a surety in like sum.
The surety, according to the court must be a responsible citizen of Nigeria and a resident of Abuja, with property of not less than N100 million.
Justice Adamu Bello, who delivered the ruling in the six-count charge of money laundering and advance fee fraud filed against the former governor by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said the documents of the property must be deposited in court.
The judge also told Sylva not to leave the country without the court’s permission.
He fixed September 12 for the commencement of trial.

World food prices dropped in May - FAO

World food prices dropped in May for a second month in a row, hit by steep falls in dairy products, sugar and other commodities, and are likely to fall further in the coming months, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on Thursday.
Food prices grabbed attention of the world leaders after their spike to record highs in February 2011 helped fuel the protests known as the Arab Spring in the Middle East and North Africa.
Food prices have fallen since.
Reuters says improvement in the security of food supplies amid the economic downturn was high on the agenda of a summit of leaders of the G8 industrial powers last month.
The FAO Food Price Index, which measures monthly price changes for a food basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, averaged 204 points in May, down from 213 points in April, the FAO said in its monthly index update.
"We were expecting a decline in May, the surprise is the extent of it, which showed that markets for oils and fats, dairy products and sugar all had to make sharp downward adjustments," Abdolreza Abbassian, FAO's senior economist and grain analyst, told Reuters.
In May, an improved outlook for crops in some major producing countries, a strengthening United States dollar, which hits competitiveness of dollar-denominated commodities, and growing concerns about Europe's debt crisis pushed prices down.
"We're in a situation where supplies have improved and we've had quite a big spillover from other markets which were all down," Abbassian said.
"The steep price drop in May meant that even if further declines were seen in June, they would probably be less marked, " he added.
The index was driven down by a 12 percent fall in dairy prices, a nine percent drop in sugar and a seven percent decline in oils and fats.
